Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement in Moore Park
The small light on one of the sensors near the floor has gone dark, or it flickers when someone walks past the track. The other one glows steadily.

Never bypass, tape over or relocate the sensors to make a door close; a door that reverses is reporting something worth fixing.
In plain words
Some sensor problems keep a schedule. A receiving eye that faces the low sun on winter mornings is flooded with light and loses the beam until the sun moves on, and a lens that frosts overnight in an unheated garage clears itself by noon. The service sorts these out for good: the sensors are swapped side to side so the receiver faces away from the light, or a small shade is fitted, and lenses and brackets are cleaned and reset above the line where slush collects. The door then closes at any hour of the day and in any month.
How the visit goesAfter a cold night the door stays open until the garage warms up. There is frost on the sensor lenses and a ridge of salty slush piled against the brackets where the snow blower was parked.

How the visit goes

- 1
Following the wire home
When the lights or the code point to the circuit, the low-voltage wire is followed from each sensor to the head unit. The technician looks for staples driven through the insulation, wire pinched behind a track bracket, sections chewed by mice, cuts where shelving or drywall screws went in, splices that have corroded, and terminals at the head unit that are loose or connected the wrong way round. A meter confirms continuity and polarity rather than guessing. Where the wire disappears into a finished ceiling, the readings at each end tell whether the hidden section is sound or whether a fresh run is the tidier answer.
- 2
Proving it with the two tests
No sensor job is finished on a steady light alone. The door is closed from the wall control and from a remote, and while it is on its way down an object is passed through the beam; the door must stop and return to fully open. Then a 2x4 is laid flat on the floor under the centre of the door and the door is closed onto it; it must reverse on contact. Both are repeated, the opener's diagnostic light is confirmed clear, and any app or hub reporting a sensor code is refreshed. The customer watches the tests so the normal behaviour is seen, not described.
- 3
A record of the work
You have a short written note of what was done: the opener make and model, what the diagnostic code and the sensor lights showed on arrival, whether the fault was alignment, wiring, sun or a worn sensor, what was replaced and where the new parts sit. It records the height the sensors were set at and that both tests were passed with you watching. That note is useful for a home inspection, for the next technician, and for you, because it shows what normal looks like on this door so a future change is easy to describe over the phone.

What affects the quote
- 1
Force and travel adjustment alongside
If the reversing turns out to involve a travel limit set long or a force setting made in summer, adjusting and re-testing those settings is included as a small extra step.
- 2
Wall or floor mounting with anchors
Mounting into concrete or masonry rather than onto the track means drilling, anchors and sealing against water, which takes more time than clipping to the rail.
- 3
Opener make and generation
Sensor pairs are matched to the opener family, and some models take a kit with brackets and wire while others take sensors alone. The head unit label sets which pair is needed and how it is priced.

Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement: questions
How do I test the sensors each month?
Start the door closing and, while it is moving, swing a broom handle through the beam low across the opening; the door should halt and travel back up. Next, put a 2x4 flat beneath the door's centre and run the door onto it; it should back off as soon as it touches. If either test fails, close the door first if you can, use it by hand with the manual release, and book a visit; do not release it if it feels heavy.
What can I check myself before calling?
Three things, all safe. Look along the floor between the sensors for anything in the path, including snow, leaves or a cobweb across a lens. Look at the two sensor lights and note whether one is dark or flickering, or both are dark. Press close and count the flashes of the opener light. If moving an object or wiping a lens brings the receiving light back on steadily, the door may close normally again; if not, those observations make the visit shorter.
Do I need to be home for the work?
It helps. The technician needs access to the garage and the head unit, and the visit ends with a demonstration of the sensor lights and the two tests so you know what normal looks like. If you cannot be there, an adult who can open the garage is enough, and the written note left afterwards records what was found and changed. Having the strip of floor beside the door clear before arrival saves time either way.

What the census means at the door
58%
Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Hardware on an older door has often been through many winters: hinges with worn pins, rollers with tired bearings, bottom brackets rusted at the floor line. Replacing these in sets restores a smooth lift and takes a surprising amount of noise out of the garage.
23%
Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).
In condominium communities the outward appearance of a garage door is often set by the corporation's rules, down to colour and panel style. We check what the board expects before ordering a replacement door, so the new one is approved and matches the row without a second conversation.
